Lo Ren star apple and how to enjoy it fully

Star apple is a signature fruit of the Mekong Delta, its soft, juicy white flesh releasing a sweet, milky nectar when fully ripe. The most famous of all is the Lo Ren star apple from Vinh Kim in Tien Giang — a sweet country gift of the year-end season.

1. Varieties and famous growing regions

Vietnam grows several kinds of star apple by skin colour: purple (purplish-brown), white (green turning yellow) and pink-buttery. Among them the best loved is the Lo Ren star apple — thin-skinned, thick-fleshed, juicy and cleanly sweet.

  • Lo Ren star apple from Vinh Kim (Chau Thanh, Tien Giang) is the celebrated growing area, once built into a brand and exported.
  • Beyond Tien Giang, star apple is also grown in Can Tho, Dong Thap, Ben Tre and other delta provinces.

2. The star apple season

Star apple is in season from around November to February, peaking at year-end and near the Lunar New Year. This is when the fruit is softest, juiciest and sweetest — a familiar country treat for the season of reunion.

3. Nutrition and benefits

Star apple is high in water, gently sweet and offers a few useful nutrients:

  • High in water, helping quench thirst and gently rehydrate.
  • A source of vitamin C and fibre that can help support immunity and digestion.
  • Provides some minerals such as calcium, plus a light lift of energy for a long day.

The flesh right against the skin and the rind itself carry an astringent, latex-like taste; scoop only the soft white flesh inside and avoid going too close to the skin.

4. How to choose good fruit

  • Choose plump, glossy fruit with smooth, evenly coloured skin (purple or green-yellow depending on the variety).
  • A very gentle press giving a soft, springy feel means it is ripe, with juicy, sweet flesh.
  • A fresh stem with a slightly soft area around it is a good sign.
  • Avoid fruit that is rock-hard (unripe and astringent) or overly soft, cracked or weeping.

5. Storing

  • Let unripe fruit sit at room temperature for a few days to soften; do not refrigerate it while still firm.
  • Once soft-ripe, refrigerate it and use within two or three days.
  • Star apple has thin skin and bruises easily; lay it gently in a single layer and avoid stacking it under weight.

6. Ways to enjoy it

The most familiar way to eat star apple is to roll and gently knead the whole fruit until the flesh inside turns soft and creamy, then cut a small opening and spoon or sip out the deliciously sweet pulp. It is lovely chilled before serving.

  • Scoop the flesh into yoghurt or over shaved ice for a cooling dessert.
  • Mash the flesh with a little milk and ice for a gently sweet, milky drink.

Before eating, roll the fruit gently on a table so the flesh softens evenly; the more skilfully you soften it, the sweeter and smoother it is to eat.

Each year-end, Farm to Door Lo Ren star apple returns from the orchards of Vinh Kim — juicy and milk-sweet, bringing the flavour of reunion to your table.
