Mangosteen: the queen of orchard fruits

If durian is the king, mangosteen is often called the queen of fruits. Beneath its thick, deep-purple rind sit snow-white segments, soft and juicy, balancing sweet and tart with a gentle fragrance — an unforgettable taste of the orchard summer.

1. Famous growing regions

Vietnamese mangosteen is mostly the traditional variety, with less varietal branching than many other fruits, yet it is renowned by locality. Lai Thieu in Binh Duong is a long-standing cradle of mangosteen, alongside Cai Mo in Ben Tre and orchards in Vinh Long, Tra Vinh and Hau Giang.

The alluvial riverside soils and warm, humid climate of the south suit mangosteen well — a demanding tree that takes many years to bear fruit reliably.

2. The mangosteen season

Mangosteen comes into season from around April to June, peaking in early summer. This is when the fruit is most plentiful, the rind pleasantly thin, the flesh sweetly balanced and the price at its friendliest.

Because the season is fairly short, mangosteen is eagerly awaited each year; once the peak passes, the fruit becomes noticeably scarcer and dearer.

3. Nutrition and benefits

Mangosteen is low in calories and high in water, while also containing vitamins and natural antioxidant compounds:

  • High in water and a source of vitamin C, which helps support immunity.
  • Contains fibre that can help support digestion.
  • The rind and flesh carry natural antioxidant compounds such as xanthones.

When opening it, the yellow sap from the rind can taint the flesh with bitterness and stain clothes; score gently around the rind and twist it apart rather than cutting deep.

4. How to choose good fruit

  • Pick fruit with an even, deep-purple rind that gives slightly and springs back when pressed — the flesh inside will be juicy and sweet.
  • Count the petals at the base (the dried flower): they usually match the number of segments inside; more petals often means more small, flat-seeded segments.
  • A green, fresh stem shows the fruit was recently picked.
  • Avoid fruit with a hard, rigid rind, cracks or leaking sap — often a sign of a woody texture or long storage.

5. Storing

  • Keep it in a cool, airy place and use within two or three days to keep the rind soft and the flesh sweet.
  • For longer keeping, place it in a perforated bag in the fridge and use within about a week.
  • If the rind begins to harden, use it soon, as the flesh inside can turn woody.

6. Ways to enjoy it

Mangosteen is finest eaten fresh, the segments enjoyed on the spot for their cool, sweet-tart balance. It also features in a number of southern orchard specialities.

  • Green mangosteen tossed into a chicken salad is a famous Lai Thieu speciality — crunchy and delightfully unusual.
  • Ripe mangosteen flesh mixed with yoghurt or other fruit makes a cooling dessert.
  • Chill it lightly before serving to make the flavour even more refreshing.

Do not try to eat the bitter rind; enjoy only the white segments, and set aside the large seed found in the biggest ones.

Each early summer, Farm to Door mangosteen returns from the orchards of Lai Thieu and Cai Mo — plump, sweetly balanced and every bit the queen of fruits on your table.
