Ninh Thuan apples: crisp and sweet from the sun-baked coast

The Ninh Thuan apple — known locally as táo ta, or Indian jujube — is a small, pretty fruit with smooth green skin that crunches crisply and tastes gently sweet. Grown in one of Vietnam’s driest, sunniest regions, it develops a concentrated sweetness and a signature crunch all its own.

1. Varieties and famous growing regions

Ninh Thuan is the heartland of the jujube apple in central Vietnam, thanks to a sunny, low-rainfall climate and sandy soil that suits the tree well. Areas such as Phan Rang, Ninh Phuoc and Ninh Son are known for orchards trained onto overhead nets that keep fruit flies away and the fruit clean.

  • Green jujube apple: small to medium, green-skinned, crisp and lightly sweet — the most common type in Ninh Thuan.
  • Net-trained apples: well protected, good-looking and less prone to pests.
  • Fruit left longer on the tree turns slightly yellow and tastes sweeter.

2. When it is in season

Ninh Thuan apples are harvested in several waves through the year, but the main and best season usually runs from late in the year into early spring, roughly November to March. This is when the fruit is at its plumpest, crispest and sweetest.

3. Nutrition and benefits

The jujube apple is a light, low-calorie snack that is high in water and fibre. It also provides vitamin C along with some natural antioxidants.

  • Rich in water and fibre, which can help you feel full and support digestion.
  • Contains vitamin C, which contributes to the immune system.
  • Naturally sweet, making it a nice snack in place of sugary sweets.

Eat it skin and all to keep the fibre — just rinse it well under running water first.

4. How to choose the good ones

  • Pick fruit with glossy green skin that is evenly plump and firm in the hand.
  • Avoid any with dark spots, wrinkling or soft, mushy patches.
  • Apples with a fresh stem are usually more recently picked and crisper.
  • Medium, uniform fruit is often crisper and sweeter than oversized ones.

5. Storing

  • In the fridge, the apples keep their crunch for about one to two weeks.
  • Keep them in a vented bag or box so moisture does not build up.
  • Wash only right before eating so the fruit does not go soggy.
  • Remove bruised fruit early so it does not spoil the rest.

6. Ways to enjoy it

It is at its best eaten fresh and crunchy straight after rinsing. The jujube apple also pairs wonderfully with chilli salt in the central-Vietnam style, works in a crisp shredded salad, or can be juiced for a cooling drink on a hot day.

  • Fresh with chilli salt or shrimp salt.
  • Sliced into a salad with herbs and peanuts.
  • Juiced, or steeped into a crunchy candied preserve.

Chill the apples for a few hours before eating to make them even crisper and more refreshing.

Farm to Door’s Ninh Thuan apples are selected from sun-blessed, net-trained orchards and picked at just the right crunch, reaching you as fresh as the day they left the vine.
