Honey mandarin: sweet, juicy and how to keep it

The honey mandarin, with its thin, easy-to-peel skin and sweet, juicy segments, is a favourite of children and grown-ups alike. This small, pretty fruit is also part of the festive spirit at Lunar New Year. Let us learn how to choose and keep it at its best.

1. Mandarin varieties and famous growing regions

  • Honey mandarin: a thin yellow-green skin with gently sweet, juicy segments, widely grown in the Mekong Delta and Dong Nai.
  • Lai Vung pink mandarin (Dong Thap): a celebrated specialty with an eye-catching orange-red skin, ripening around the Lunar New Year.
  • Tieu mandarin: flatter fruit with a thicker skin and a bolder sweet-tart taste.

2. When they are in season

Mandarins peak toward the end of the year, from about November to January, right around the Lunar New Year. This is when Lai Vung pink mandarins glow their brilliant orange-red, chosen by many families for the festive fruit tray and as gifts.

3. Nutrition and benefits

Like other citrus fruits, mandarins are rich in vitamin C and fibre, and handy for being so easy to peel and carry. A few segments after a meal are a gentle, tasty way to top up your vitamins.

  • Rich in vitamin C, which may help support immunity.
  • High in water, helping to hydrate the body naturally.
  • A mild sweetness that makes a wholesome snack for children.

Keep the white pith around the segments when you eat — it is a good source of fibre that many people discard.

4. How to choose good mandarins

  • Choose fruit heavy for its size with taut, smooth skin and a fresh stem.
  • A good honey mandarin usually has slightly thin skin that springs back gently when pressed, not rock-hard.
  • Overly shiny, hard skin can mean the fruit is underripe or old; wrinkled skin means it has dried out.
  • Avoid any fruit with mould spots or mushy soft patches.

5. Storing

  • Keep mandarins in a cool, shaded place and use within about a week.
  • Refrigerating them keeps them longer, around two to three weeks.
  • Do not seal them in plastic while damp, as that invites mould; let air circulate instead.

6. Ways to enjoy and mix

Mandarins are best peeled and eaten fresh, but they are also lovely juiced or turned into desserts. Their gentle sweetness balances many salads and drinks beautifully.

  • Squeeze mandarin juice with a little honey and ice for a mild, cooling drink.
  • Toss the segments through a green salad or yoghurt for a fresh lift.

Dry clean mandarin peel and steep it in hot tea — its gentle aroma is wonderfully warming on a chilly day.

The sweet, juicy honey mandarins from Farm to Door are selected at the orchard and delivered fresh, so every segment bursts with flavour.
