Moc Chau strawberries: a highland specialty

Say Vietnamese strawberries and many people picture Moc Chau — the cool highland plateau of Son La province. More than a thousand metres up, the crisp climate gives this land plump, softly fragrant, sweetly balanced berries all its own.

1. Varieties & famous growing regions

Moc Chau is a major strawberry hub in the north, with many farms and pick-your-own gardens open to visitors. Alongside it, Da Lat on the Lam Dong plateau is the celebrated strawberry region of the south.

  • Japanese varieties such as Hana are prized for large, sweet and fragrant fruit.
  • Many farms grow under net-houses, tended cleanly with minimal chemical use.
  • Pick-your-own gardens have become a familiar part of Moc Chau tourism.

2. Season

Moc Chau strawberries are a fruit of the cold season. The main crop runs through winter and spring, usually peaking from around December to March, when the chilly weather lets the berries ripen slowly, build sweetness and hold their crisp bite.

3. Nutrition & benefits

Strawberries are low in calories yet rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, with a colour and fragrance that are hard to resist.

  • Rich in vitamin C, which helps support immunity and the skin.
  • Contains anthocyanins — the red pigment with antioxidant properties.
  • High in fibre and water, a good fit for a healthy light snack.

Strawberries do not grow sweeter after picking. So choose evenly red fruit from the start rather than buying pale, greenish berries hoping they will ripen.

4. How to choose good berries

  • A bright red right up to the stem, with no white or green shoulders.
  • Green caps hugging the fruit, visible seeds and a dry surface.
  • A gentle natural fragrance — the more aromatic, the fuller the flavour.
  • Avoid berries with soft spots, weeping or bruised patches.

5. Storage

  • Keep the caps on, unwashed, in a single layer in a paper-lined box in the fridge.
  • Rinse quickly only just before eating so the berries do not turn mushy and bland.
  • For longer keeping, wash, dry and freeze for smoothies, jam or ice cream.

6. Ways to enjoy & drinks

Moc Chau strawberries are at their best eaten fresh, but they transform beautifully too: blended with yoghurt, muddled with fresh milk and ice, or steeped in sugar as a strawberry syrup for cool drinks and fruit teas.

  • Strawberry jam and preserved strawberries are classic Moc Chau souvenirs.
  • Fresh berries pair with yoghurt or top a cake for a pretty dessert.

Make strawberry syrup by layering berries and sugar and chilling for a few hours until the juices release; that syrup with soda is perfect on a sunny day.

From the windswept Moc Chau highlands, Farm to Door selects ripe, in-season berries and chills them quickly after picking, so that special highland flavour reaches you intact.
