Crisp, sweet guava: varieties, season and how to enjoy it

Guava is a humble yet charming fruit: crisp, cool-sweet and gently fragrant. Grown across many regions, it is available almost year-round and makes a wholesome snack the whole family loves.

1. Guava varieties and growing regions

Guava grows widely, from Mekong provinces such as Tiền Giang, Bến Tre and Đồng Tháp to northern lowland areas like Hải Dương. A few popular, well-liked varieties:

  • Taiwan pear guava: round fruit with white flesh, crisp texture, mild sweetness and few seeds — very popular.
  • Queen guava: crunchy and notably sweet, with soft seeds and neat, even fruit.
  • Red-fleshed guava: with striking pink-red flesh, fragrant and usually softer and sweeter.
  • Xá lị guava: a familiar variety with large, crunchy fruit and little tartness.

2. Season

Guava fruits almost year-round thanks to its repeated flowering. Even so, it tends to be most abundant and sweetest in the dry season — from late in the year into early summer — when plenty of sunshine helps the fruit build up sugar.

3. Nutrition and benefits

Guava is among the most vitamin-C-rich fruits, high in fibre yet low in calories — an ideal wholesome snack.

  • Very high in vitamin C, which may help support immunity.
  • Rich in fibre, which may support digestion and a feeling of fullness.
  • Low in calories, suiting anyone after a light snack.

The skin and the flesh just beneath it hold much of the vitamins and fibre, so wash well and eat it unpeeled rather than paring it away.

4. How to choose good guava

  • Pick firm fruit with taut skin, a bright green colour turning faintly yellow.
  • For a crunch, choose still-firm guava; for a soft, fragrant one, pick fruit turning yellow and giving off scent.
  • Avoid fruit with soft brown spots, split skin or bruised, waterlogged patches.
  • Medium-small guavas are often crisper and firmer than oversized ones.

5. Storage

  • Crisp guava keeps its freshness in the fridge for about four to seven days.
  • Leave firm green guava out for a few days to soften before refrigerating.
  • Once cut, wrap tightly and use soon to keep the crunch and prevent browning.

6. Ways to enjoy and mix

The simplest joy is eating it fresh: sliced and dipped in chilli salt or shrimp salt — the crisp sweet-sour bite is irresistible. Guava also makes refreshing juice and smoothies, or a crunchy guava salad.

  • Guava juice with a little lime and honey for a fresh, cooling drink.
  • A red-guava smoothie gives a pretty pink colour and gentle fragrance.
  • Crisp guava tossed into a salad with dried shrimp, Vietnamese coriander and peanuts.

The best dip for guava is chilli salt or Tây Ninh shrimp salt pounded with a touch of sugar — salty, sweet and spicy at once, lifting the fruit’s crisp sweetness.

Crisp, sweet and wholesome, guava is a snack many families cannot do without. Farm to Door picks fresh guava from the orchard and delivers it while it is still at its crunchiest.
