Clean strawberries: choosing & washing right

Plump, fragrant strawberries are a family favourite. But because their thin skin cannot be peeled, choosing and washing them well really matters.

1. Recognising fresh strawberries

  • An even, bright red with green, un-wilted caps and leaves.
  • A dry surface with visible seeds, no soft spots or weeping.
  • A gentle natural fragrance — scentless berries tend to taste bland.

2. Why not to soak them long

Strawberries absorb water easily. Long soaking in salt water or produce wash leaves them mushy, watery and quick to spoil. Rinse them quickly, and only right before eating.

3. Washing them the right way

Rinse gently under running water with the caps left on so water does not seep into the core. Then spread them on paper towel or a colander to dry fully before removing the caps.

Only wash the berries you are about to eat. Leaving the rest unwashed keeps them fresh longer.

4. Storing

  • Arrange them in a single layer in a paper-lined box, loosely covered, in the fridge.
  • Remove any bruised berry at once so it does not spoil the others.
  • For longer keeping, wash, dry and freeze them for smoothies or jam.

Farm to Door strawberries are harvested and chilled quickly, keeping their crisp freshness all the way to your table.
